Filipino Catholics reenact crucifixion to mark Good Friday
Catholics in the Philippines marked Good Friday with a dramatic reenactment of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, in a decades-old tradition. San Fernando City, north of the capital Manila, played host to the gruesome spectacle, as crowds from around the world gathered to watch the proceedings.
The devotees who take part believe that extreme pain is a way to atone for sins or give thanks to God, and are genuinely nailed to wooden crosses as part of the ritual.
63-year-old Ruben Enaje has played the role of Jesus for 35 years, and was among 10 devotees nailed to a cross. ‘Because my body is getting weaker, I can’t tell if this is the last or if there will be a next one or if this is really the final time,’ said Enaje afterwards, nursing his bandaged hands.
