Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as HHS Secretary, had previously canceled hundreds of millions in federal funding for mRNA vaccine projects (including respiratory ones) and overseen an initial FDA refusal to even review the application earlier that year, consistent with his long-standing public criticism that mRNA platforms carry excess risks for upper-respiratory viruses; the agency later reversed and an independent advisory committee voted unanimously that benefits outweighed risks.

 Fermented foods such as kimchi contain lactic-acid bacteria that laboratory, animal, and small human studies have linked to general immune modulation and, in some cases, reduced influenza virus replication in controlled settings; however, these effects do not constitute specific, strain-matched protection comparable to a vaccine, nor do they replace immunization for high-risk groups.
