Also with the generator, you MIGHT be able to add plywood panels with sound absorbing foam to the 4 insides, so the air to cool the motor can suck in one end and blow out the other....
AND with that shitty muffler, you can unscrew it, and throw in a hand full of fine gravel, making sure there is no way that any of it can get back into the engine.... and or get a friend who can weld to make an extra baffle to fit onto it... And toss the gravel into that.
OR you might be able to get much longer exhaust / muffler bolts and make up some kind of box / baffle arrangement that extends the stock muffler.....
