The Cornell 7 allegations have now become an online merchandise industry. WIRED found thousands of “I Am Jane Doe” products across Amazon, Etsy, Redbubble and independent websites, including shirts, mugs, bracelets, bumper stickers and even merchandise featuring serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Some sellers say they are supporting survivors—but others appear to be cashing in on a still-disputed case.
One clothing brand promised only five percent of net proceeds to a women’s organization before deleting its promotion and apologizing. An anonymous website claimed some money would go directly to Jane Doe, but her attorney says no fundraising sites have been authorized and urged the public to be cautious. The seven accused men deny wrongdoing, none has been criminally charged, and opportunists are already turning the controversy into a storefront.
