Longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been fired following an absolutely disturbing incident aboard an American Airlines flight.
A fellow passenger says Thornton spent nearly an hour using a chatroom for people who identify as being attracted to children. She photographed his laptop, alerted the flight crew and law enforcement met the plane when it landed at LAX.
Thornton was questioned and released without charges. His attorney says he entered the site accidentally after receiving the wrong link while attempting to help people experiencing suicidal thoughts. The chatroom later described itself as a support service and said it prohibits illegal material and contact with minors.
Sony Pictures Television initially suspended Thornton while it investigated. Days later, the company announced his employment had been terminated effective immediately and began replacing his voice in upcoming episodes.
Being present in the chatroom does not prove Thornton committed a crime, and authorities did not charge him. Sony nevertheless decided the incident was serious enough to end his 15-year run as the voice of one of television's biggest game shows.
