China launches first domestically designed and built aircraft carrier

China has launched its newest, and most advanced aircraft carrier, ‘Fujian’. It is also the first Chinese aircraft carrier to be designed and built entirely in China, according to state media. Previous Chinese aircraft carriers, ‘Liaoning’ and ‘Shandong’, were based on Soviet designs. The new ship features a host of advancements, including an electromagnetic catapult assisted launch system, bringing it in line with the most modern military technology.

While the vessel is still some five years from full deployment, the aircraft carrier’s ability to project power represents an important step in China’s naval expansion. The launch is likely to inflame already high tensions over Beijing’s military ambitions, especially in the South China Sea and over the sovereignty of Taiwan.
