The Bun Festival, one of Hong Kong’s most famous events, kicked off on Friday after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The celebration draws thousands to Cheung Chau Island to spend time and have fun.

The feast dates back to the 1800s when local fishermen drove away pirates and sickness by displaying a statue of the Taoist sea deity Pak Tai. The festivities conclude at midnight with a dramatic bun-scrambling competition, in which contestants clamber up an 18-meter ‘bun tower’ made from imitation buns to catch as many as possible.
