However, the Catholic Church was against Mussolini's idea, as we can see from the fact that the apostolic nuncio to Italy Francesco Borgongini rushed to protest against this with the chancellor Galeazzo Ciano, Mussolini's son-in-law. Borgongini expressed to Ciano his firm opposition to the construction of a mosque in Rome, pointing out that in his opinion it would have represented “a wound to Christian and Catholic sentiment in us and throughout the world”.
