I was once with a 9, possibly 10 out of 10 chick for a little over a year. The way it happened was right from the beginning I just assumed I had absolutely zero chance and so treated her straight up contempt, never holding back in words or actions, yet she inexplicably treated me with great interest which is how I started seeing her.
After about a year of believing that 'She won't be here tomorrow so who gives a fuck', I decided to start 'doing things right' because 'if she's stayed this long she's obviously not going anywhere'. Things went downhill fast and she left. It took me years to figure out what I did wrong since in my mind I was finally "stepping up" like everyone said I should. Never be the 'nice guy' no matter what.
