The French branch of my family left France when Louis XIV was king. Apparently they made a good choice although not so much the past few decades.

They were smart and courageous enough to understand that things were only going to go south that's probably why they left.. And they were right.. Louis XVI, French revolution, Napoleon, French empire, the plague of Marseille 1720 etc.. WW1 WW2.. They probably went to Louisiana right ?
