Watch electricity hit a fork in the road at half a billion frames per second

In this video, I measure a wave of electricity traveling down a wire, and answer the question - how does electricity know where to go? How does "electricity" "decide" where electrons should be moving in wires, and how long does that process take? Spoiler alert - very fast!

I've been very excited about this project for a while - it was a lot of work to figure out a reliable way to make these measurements, but I've learned SO much by actually watching waves travel down wires, and I hope you do too!

I knew about the wave of electricity peaking and sloshing around in the wires.. like echo's / pressure waves in a pipe... Just not to this degree... Old automotive electrical system books, talk about how when you have points and coil ignition systems, that you NEED a capacitor of the right type and value to soak up the voltage and current rise, that abruptly happens when the points open. 12 V ignition systems can get voltage rises of up to 400V - which is a continuation of the current flowing across the gap, as it increases, which is called arcing and it leads to burning of the points...

Oxygen + microscopic hot arc = metal transfer across the points + burning from the arc etc.

If you get the right value capacitor and clean and lubricate the point heel and cam lobe with graphite grease - the points will stay in proper adjustment and last almost forever.....
