From what I've seen, only three things make someone content:
1. Wealth (genetic, money, status)
2. Intense belief (old or new religions, politics)
3. Being able to obtain what they naturally desire
One could even argue that 3 is just a subset of 1 and 2.

I've tried the whole "do things just to do them" thing. I did it for years during my youth. I used to go to movie theaters, bookshops, and shopping centers. I used to travel to towns that were 30, 45, 60 minutes away just to go somewhere I had never been before. I used to frequent tons on internet communities and forced myself to talk to new people about new topics. Can't say it ever worked, and my best results were from my digital endeavors (I doubt most men these days could have these same results, though - the internet I'm talking about was the internet of 10+ years ago).

Looking at my life today, I can only say I'm now wealthy in memories and a few trinkets and thousands of dollars poorer. I can only say, without a shadow of a doubt, that the area I live in just isn't for me, but that others don't seem much better, and are even worse in some ways. I can't exactly say I regret living for the sake of living, but it's not even a minor solution to the problems men are going through. Maybe for your generation, Stardusk, when you could travel the world and have a chick in every port, but even on that grand of a scale it doesn't seem to do anything.

Routine is completely pointless since it's little more than the act of maintaining a life you already don't enjoy living, and you're acutely aware of that every single day. But, if pill men were honest about this their grift would be over. Practically speaking, a home, community, woman, and children are the only things that actually work for most people. Even a weirdo like me wanted a few of those things. There just isn't a replacement for lacking what your biology actually demands.
