I had an acquaintance who worked as a lifeguard for a few years and he told me that the times he rescued someone that was panicking, a woman every time btw, if he thought there was a risk that the woman would cause him to drown he would give them a real solid punch or elbow in the face to knock them out. After that he would easily swim back to shore while carrying the woman with him. Made sense to me, but now after what HD is saying, rather than a useful tidbit it seems like essential information.
