In my experience being successfully self-employed was about equal parts vocational skill and client management.
At the start when youre building a rep/portfolio, youre usually dealing with shit jobs for shit clients, so youre essentially their employee (you dont feel very self employed). However, as you build that rep, you start to gain power in your client negotiations. You can charge more, you can set more favorable terms, etc.
The most interesting thing is that high end clients want independent and self-assured professionals. For example, I found that clients were more positive with my work when i started charging higher rates because they assumed that a higher price meant a higher quality product.
You could be amazing at your vocation, but if you dont learn how to accurately value your work, negotiate and assert yourself, youre going to effectively remain an employee forever.
