The Myford Super 7 Lathe: An Introduction

Published on 07 Oct 2023 / In Film & Animation

The Myford Super 7 lathe is a popular machine for the model engineer and machinist. In this video we give an introduction to the Myford Series 7 lathes, specifically our Myford Super 7 Connoisseur. We discuss the capabilities and why it is the preferred machine for our workshop.

Even if you don't own a Myford lathe, if you are a machinist, hopefully there is plenty of interesting content that is transferable to any metalworking lathe.

I'd guess one would need an engineering degree just to operate one of these properly?

No - reading the instruction manual would be the first thing, and practice setting it up to do everything SLOWLY and write down the operational sequence to do the different functions.... and reading books and watching videos on lathe operations.... especially this model. I don't know if you need ALL the accessories... AND most of them are starting to get into specialist operations... but it's a fact of life that the simpler something is, the more common it is, because it's easier to obtain, make, modify, adapt and that comes into material costs and processing costs. e.g. a not super high tolerance shaft is called a wheel barrow axle. / gate hinge / - and then it just goes up and up and up and up in complexity, specialist materials, forging, heat treatment, experience, testing etc... then you end up with titanium landing gear for jet fighters... and blade thingy doovies for helicopters and watch parts, but for every jet fighter with forged titanium landing gear, there are 10 billion wheel barrow axles and gate hinges... So a really basic shit lathe with no thread cutting etc., is a HUGE help for many not so complex parts and patterns, a much better lathe with thread cutting and a ton of fittings is brilliant... a much bigger lathe is even better, and truly best in the world 6 axis CNC / DNC lathe is even better again.... by a fucking long shot... (CNC = Computer Numerical Control / Direct NC) But unless you have a genuine need, the amount of need vs the cost of the machine, vs hiring someone who can do rare or once off jobs is a better thing.... You can have a GOOD but basic lathe for many things, and you outsource to a really good toolmaker... with his really good lathe, and his precision measuring equipent, for other things... So I kind of really would like to have THAT lathe AND all of it's accessories, An INDEXING head would be really good - to divide a rotation into exact divisions... but I can't see myself doing much f that either... But the stock lathe would be nice with the accessories that it comes with - which would suit most people, for most things, most of the time. --- lookit up on youtube Search 1. lathe lessons /////// https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLY67-4BrEae ///////// https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fkz5hOKMTA ////// https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J69eRXE5sQM ///////// ////// Search 2. myford lathe tutorials

This is the first and last and only time - where warranted, that I will ever do this for you. You have a computer and a keyboard and your fingers are not broken, if you want to find out about anything, go to the right places and ask the right questions. If you cannot fnd the right answers from the wright places, your either asking the wrong questions or your going to the wrong places or both. This is the manufacturers website ----- https://www.myford.co.uk/ ------ https://www.myford.co.uk/acata....log/English_Manuals. - And you will never aim another "I can't be fucked getting off my arse and finding out about this all by myself" question at me ever again.

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: wow, no offense intended. you are not required to answer. I'll refrain from such in the future anyway.

@TripeSwing: I have a philosphy, I only ask questions IF after almost all other avenues of investigation are exhausted first. Putting the obligation to do your own work for you, onto others isn't appreciated. It took me like 10 minutes to find a few courses online, on how to operate lathes in a general sense, and to find the manufacturers website and find the manuals and all other information about it and to copy // paste and write up a narrative. I don't like being imposed upon, for things, that if you were really interested, there is nothng stopping you from finding out these things as well.

@TripeSwing: If you were really interested in learning about lathes you would have done something about finding out how to operate them and what you can do with a basic set up... But you didn't even try...... You just backdoored your way out of the opportunity to learn by coming to a colclusion - "Oh you would probably need an engineering degree to operate one of these properly" - with NO effort to examine the issues - like the OWNERS MANUAL available from the MANUFACTURERS website - the brand is on the lathe, in the starter picture, and it's in the title, and there are courses on how to operate lathes... and you made NO EFFORT to find oout anything before making that assertion... And not only do you NOT make any use of all the resources that I dug up for you, you backdoored your way out of any further obligation to lift your own game, with the "Oh woe is me - your such a cunt" comentary.... If you want respect from other men, show some spine.... You have access to the entire recorded history at your fingertips, on almost any subject under the sun - so instead of looking it up yourself, you call me a cunt, just to get out of having to look things up in the future and finding things out and figurng out things yourself..... You are responsible for your own descisions and actions....
