shale oil breakevens are closer to 50. some of have got their breakevens down to the high 30s. the issue is that they need sustained prices, as lenders are wary after being burnt on the last 2 spikes and drops.

whats left of the contemporary western right is just buttersoft bitches who refuse to process the severity of what is happening

theyll soon collapse into total irrelevance, and be replaced by a hard pivot toward fascism

what frustrates me is that we cant motivate average joe to get serious now, but he'll be more than happy to goosestep around blaming the gays and the joos when the real violence starts

you can pay a monkey in a labcoat (no offense to monkeys) to say anything

the same applies to economists, even more so really

we dont live in a technocracy because specialists and experts are prone to small group biases, intellectual sclerosis and outright corruption and power seeking (see fauci). no one is smart enough and no science is so advanced that they can design policies for other people. all specialists can do is provide specific technical guidance on generalized policy controlled by laymen

i was never big on experts before, but covid has demonstrated how frighteningly corrupt and incompetent the west's supposed intellectual class is. people are either fucking idiot diversity hires or bookish people that are too scared and comfortable to speak out against the dominant ideologues in their midst. i wouldnt trust our expert class to clean my toilet, much less design policy to better my condition

its funny that no one else has noticed that 2 fed hawks were forced to resign and powell (leaning hawkish) is being similarly threatened right when the pressure is on to dial back qe and up the dot plot forecasts

fed seats have been used as a feeding trough since their inception, but suddenly now the insider trading is being exposed?

just another sign that we are truly in the end game now, if you still had any doubts

Among the dumbest things tfm has said, is that "without our complicated system of trade, the earth can normally only support one billion people". It's completely pulled out of his ass. The earth doesn't care. The earth had 1 billion people, back in 1800, when global trade was far less prevalent as it is now, but grain yields were far smaller. One acre in the 1800s could grow 20 bushels. The state of Iowa averages 200 bushels an acre today. Food is something that can be grown locally. Tfm really needs to learn math.

yes, modern agricultural systems...supported by trade. inputs? trade. finance? trade. economies of scale? trade. according to your own argument, the only thing tfm said that was wrong was "less than 1b people" instead of "around 1b people". considering the size and generality of the estimate, a forgivable rounding error

@Darthtickles: the breeds of corn we have now are far more effective than the ones we had in the 1800s. Modern corn breeds wouldn't just dissappear because global trade shut down. Even if we had to go back to using horses to farm, we'd still have 200 bushel an acre corn. We could continue selective breeding, even without global trade. Crazy, I know.

@Turdpool: right, you would have higher yields, but nothing close to what we currently have. moreover, agricultural systems have developed incrementally alongside global trade, so there would be mass starvation as these systems were adjusted to a non-trade system if forced to through sudden collapse of global trade. your argument is far too narrow and simplistic relative to the overall subject you are discussing. "we have better seeds, so there wouldnt be mass starvation in the case of global collapse" is hilariously wrong

@Darthtickles: there would be mass starvation, but I guarrentee that 6 billion people would not starve to death. Even in maoist China only about 10% of the population starved.

And what was happening in maoist China was worse than collapse, because there was a powerful government actively preventing food production.
