The dumbest bike law you've never heard of (there was once a good reason for this - see my pinned comment)

50 years ago, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission drafted a set of (well meaning) regulations concerning bicycles. As a result, we are required to sell "sidewalk bicycles" with foot brakes, otherwise known as "coaster brakes". While this only applies to the smallest bicycles, it does limit our choices, and seriously limits how smaller mountain bikes can be engineered. Today we'll talk about this law and what it means.

Here it is right here https://www.ecfr.gov/current/t....itle-16/chapter-II/s

Yeah the original (????) caliper brakes, from the 1970's - on the shit like the first 10 speed racers - and other similar era bikes, well the calipers flexed like bananas, had fuck all stopping power, and if you were sailing down a HUGE hill at high speed, you had better factored in that your stopping distance was going to be like 3 to 5 times the distance of a (fuck knows) and with CHROME PLATED steel rims, if they were wet from the rain - you had NO brakes at all...

So in essence making kids bikes - at that time, keep coaster brakes - was a pretty good idea.... in principle.

However the cheap cunts who put fucking worthless "token ideas of brakes" on the cheap shit discount bikes still use the 10c caliper brakes...

And the brake technology has moved on - where the DECENT caliper brakes - when properly set up - will stop you on a dime, everyone has alumium alloy rims - which with decent ALL WEATHER pads, do stop in the wet, AND there are brake developments beyond the caliper brakes, into hydraulic disk brakes...

So the law from that time - is redundant.

And the manufacturers - importers of bikes with the cheapest "Barely Stopping Brake Sets" - deserve to have their faces punched in with hammers...

Having token gestures of brakes that actually stop the bicycle - eventually.... taking like 20 meters from 30 Kmh... when GOOD brakes will stop you in 5 meters - or even less - and over the handle bars you go....

Paying lip service to the law, when in fact the brakes are essentially worthless.

That is putting peoples lives in danger - because they want to cheapen out on a decent braking system - just to save a couple of dollars on components.
