This is one of the most terrifying aviation stories imaginable. A passenger jet headed from Dubai to Tel Aviv allegedly became the scene of a violent attack inside the cockpit.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was carrying roughly 170 people when one pilot allegedly stabbed another and apparently tried to crash the aircraft. The jet suddenly descended thousands of feet while terrified passengers heard screaming near the front.
The aircraft transmitted code 7500—the international signal for unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. Israel scrambled fighter jets while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior security officials held emergency consultations.
Passengers and crew reportedly rushed forward, subdued the alleged attacker and helped secure the cockpit. Another qualified person assisted the injured pilot and the aircraft diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The plane landed safely and everyone aboard survived. Video reviewed by the Associated Press reportedly showed bloodied and injured men receiving treatment while others guarded the cockpit.
Israeli officials described the incident as an attempted jihadist attack and claimed the pilot intended to crash the plane. Flydubai urged against premature speculation, however, and the alleged attacker's precise motive remains under formal investigation.
