Working class virtue is a myth, in my experience. You can recognize working-class scumbags early, because they're covertly threatening you with the first words out of their mouth. I used to be in the military, I've got a lot of guns, I know a guy in a gang, etc. It's jarring when you're not used to it, but now that I've seen it, it's basically a scumbag name tag. Just don't talk to them so they have no ammo against you, find out who hates them and befriend them, and you're good.
Middle class scumbags are worse, if you're trapped with them. If you're in a HOA with them, sell your house. If you're co-workers with them, move. My experience of middle-class scumbags is as he described, with the passive aggression, general insincerity, compulsive lying, etc. They're always scheming and organizing a verbal lynch mob. Every word spoken to these types is a liability.
But we're talking about scumbags here. Decent working-class people are decent. Decent middle-class people are rarer, in my experience; the middle class revolves much more strongly around conformity. Middle class society revolves around backbiting. They're all in secret backbiting groups against each other, while they pretend to be friendly toward each other. I think they feel safer being in these groups, so it's like an insurance policy. When they figure out the target is weak enough, or the group is strong enough, they all file false complaints against them together and get them fired.
