Disgraceful conduct by the bar management.

I hope all Argus readers boycott this bar and tell their friends and family members to boycott it as well.

It looks likely they were operating an active policy of discrimination against solo men - because they even admitted it in writing but, once caught out and exposed, tried to row back, deny it and do a screeching U-turn.

It says it all they want to photograph and store the ID of customers. My personal details are not given away to strangers. I would refuse to go in anywhere that wanted my photograph or ID. That's a big warning signal in itself.

If anyone has allowed them to take their photograph and store their ID they should write in with a subject access request under the GDPR laws and request a copy of all data held on them. At least that ought to cause them quite a lot of work finding things and dealing with the requests.,

The only mystery to me is why the door person bothered photographing Mr Sharples and taking his ID BEFORE telling him he couldn't go in because he was alone. It ought to have been obvious the gentleman was on his own.

Barbara's Bier Haus , I've discovered, is part of a chain. There are several others so it would be interesting to look into them as well. edited

Well I certainly wasn't expecting this to blow up! My Google review got unpublished, as did my resubmission. They edited their response too, removing the gender based policy part. I'm glad they're getting some accountability but it's disappointing that they're now flat out denying there was a policy and it was all a mistake despite telling me in writing that there was one and the bouncer clearly enforcing it. Anyway will be interesting to see what happens next time I go there alone.

so they made a policy, had staff enforce that policy and then even confirmed that policy in writing - but revoked it and said it was a mistake when it faced scrutiny? how can it be a 'mistake' if they've actually been enforcing it?

sounds like they're trying to row back on the fact they broke the law and breached their licensing conditions by minimizing their response to only address the google reply, rather than the actual of the policy of discrimination.

poor show of accountability from the business, especially as numerous people have reported they've been blocked from entering the venue for the same reasons.edited

All the regular no ideas saying its done to make it a safe space for women. Thats not the reason. They have these they are called gay bars. What Barbaras was trying to do is an old fashioned way of keeping bars busy. If you have a load of single men in there then you wont get women in. So you only allow groups and women in for a bit in order to keep a nice mixture. Groups of men and women are more likely to mix and create an atmosphere and therfore encourage more people in in general. A bar full of single men sitting in silence creates a bad atmosphere

Crazy to refuse entry or service unless the individual is clearly Drunk. I regularly go for 3 or 4 pints on my own on Saturdays, mainly Crawley, but sometimes Brighton and Worthing. Listening to Podcasts, drinking my beer, or Cider, minding my own business. Single Guys are normally pretty trustworthy, it is the groups of rowdy Lads and Ladies that are the main problem.

It's pretty obvious why. They are trying to make it safer for women to enjoy by removing solo predators and drink spikers. I think that's a good thing.

Never been to the UK, but here in the US, if a bar doesn't want me (haven't been to one in at least 30yrs), I'd avoid the ones with bouncers (means things get rough at times), simply get a bottle from a store then go home. Perhaps I like things a bit too simple.

Pus used to be great places but they have destroyed them and I haven't been to one for years. They are to noisy and the drinks are overpriced and friendly forget that. Beers from store drink at home much nicer.
