Having done my own self-improvement, I have seen the same. It's not even the process of self-improvement, as some might try to tell you. You're not being annoying with your self-improvement talk. They hate you because they see you getting better, they see you doing the work, and they don't want to do the work, so the best they can do is TRY TO STOP YOU. They are choosing to harm you socially because it's easy, and they are choosing your failure over their success.

Someone who would do this to you, this crab-bucket mentality, is someone who would sell you into slavery in Egypt for a pittance, to borrow from the bible. The self-improvement journey always leads to this realization that your fiends and family are not your friends, they are your enemies. The moment things look up for you, they have a problem with it, and the moment you start moving up in the world, they root against you.

If I had won the lottery 10 years ago, before I realized that they all hated me and wanted the worst for me, I'd have been an absolute philanthropist with the money. I would have spent more of it setting up those close to me than on my own enjoyment. But now, not a chance. And I'd rather search haystacks for needles than search society for a trustworthy person.
