Residents voted for the peninsula to join Russia over a decade ago. Since then, it has become a thorn in the side of the collective West. That is despite the fact it previously united the Soviet Union and Western powers in planning a more prosperous future towards the end of World War Two, at the 1945 Yalta Conference.
