RTM: Janice Fiamengo on The Goddess That Failed

In this interview, I sit down with Janice Fiamengo to discuss her book The Goddess That Failed and the case she makes that feminism did not begin as a reasonable movement for equality that simply lost its way, but was compromised by hostility toward men from the beginning.

We start with Janice’s own background and intellectual journey, including how someone once immersed in feminist scholarship came to reject many of its central assumptions. From there, we dig into some of the major arguments of the book: the construction of female victim identity, the influence of Betty Friedan and The Feminine Mystique, and the ways feminist ideology encouraged women to interpret relations between the sexes through resentment, grievance, and conflict.

We also explore the role men themselves may have played in feminism’s success. Did the Western romantic ethic, chivalry, and the deeply ingrained expectation that men should organize themselves around women’s happiness make men unusually susceptible to feminist demands? And when feminists condemn “benevolent sexism,” are they criticizing chivalry while still benefiting from the expectations it places on men?

The conversation then turns to feminist influence in higher education, the radicalization of young women through narratives of systemic victimhood, and the broader question of whether those ideas amplify preexisting expectations about what men owe women.

We discuss Janice’s analysis of Norah Vincent’s experience living publicly as a man, including what Vincent discovered about male life and the revealing response of men themselves to her account.

We also examine the development of feminist ideas surrounding rape culture, from Susan Brownmiller through Catharine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin, and ask whether portraying women collectively as victims of male sexual aggression helped institutionalize a permanent culture of fear and grievance.

From there, we confront one of the starkest double standards surrounding gender and violence: the dramatically different cultural reactions to violence against women versus sexual violence and mutilation committed against men.

Finally, we talk about feminist mothers raising sons to become ideological allies, the psychological consequences of teaching boys to view masculinity and other men with suspicion, and the difficult contradiction between maternal devotion and political indoctrination.

This is a wide-ranging conversation about feminism’s history, the creation of gender resentment, chivalry, male disposability, sexual politics, education, motherhood, and the increasingly troubled relationship between men and women in the modern West.

@19:58 - They seem to think that it would just be women that would have to have a worldview change before men and women could coexist in more harmony. Many men aren't interested anymore. Moreover, Now that technology is being created that can replace much of the direct utility of dealing with women, there is almost no incident for men to be anything but a mgtow.
