It's good seeing the basic-er methods for making steel knives..... Did you know that it was only 20 or so years back that the scientists running the blast furnaces, figured that grinding up the coke, the iron ore and the lime and making them into roundish briquets, around 3" in diameter, allowed the combustion and deoxidation of the iron oxide and the melting into iron, and the fluxing from the lime (calcium carbonate) to proceed at a very efficient and great rate of knots.... If you noticed they were shovelling in the more or less exact same ingredients, And instead of lime stone, they were crushing up oyster shells.....

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: are you familiar with Zatoichi movies & TV series from 60s Japan? I love the stuff. Lone Wolf & Cub, by the same producers, is also great. I have a cultural crush on Japan.

Also I sort of forget the exact temperatures and colours, but I used to reset thousands of coiled steel train springs, and roll them into a big heating furnace and then pull them out one at a time and then stretch them back to length using tongs - by opening the coils back up again.... AND temperature is a critical thing. Too hot and they get soft and head towards melting, and too cold and the steel is impossible to bend - and although the camera had funny rendering - with bright things in a darkish room, and it's not calibrated to an exact setting - spring steels are in the same area as good knife making steels in relation to carbon content etc... so if the knife is too cold and it's hammered too much it will crack rather than flow under the blows... I guess the ideal temperature for working is 1/3 to half way, of the way, up from an orange tree orange to a lemon tree yellow... This is why the colour adjustments in the camera have been getting fucked with - showing the blade at a duller red heat - which is too cold for working....... and the thickness of the blade that means he has to get fast short reheats and fast and short working times. It's critical or it won't work - and the camera is not set to a laborotory colour matching....

@TripeSwing: Yeah - I have seen the films / TV series - bits of them. But TV in Australia is SO fucking bad.. that I started to have longer and longer periods where I would just unplug the piece of shit - because I refuse to have guests come into my home and insult me and lie to me - and turning on the TV was letting in these lying cunts, to do just that.... so the periods of not watching any TV at all slowly grew and the periods of time for having it on, slowly decreased until in the middle of the 2011 floods - the 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, on all channels broadcasting was all about the floods, and I was sitting on a chair in my room, with the TV on a desk, and the water was nearly 800 mm deep - over the slab.... and the non stop news was 1 hour of crap, repeatedly looped with 5 minutes of content removed and 5 minutes of content updated.... all around the clock - non stop for 2 weeks and the fucking news stations would send a helicopter up here to orbit the town and so all the other "shit for brains" networks would all send their helicopters up here, so we had 6 or 7 helicopters flying around and around and around and around the town for 2 hours... And in a place that is dead quiet - that is a fucking lot of noise - and all I wanted to do was have an instant Vietnam era quad popup gun on the roof and to go shoot them all down.... It was like 35*C, 100 % humidity and moron helicopter pilots and their moron TV crews and their moron TV network managmement and their moron TV network #metoo clone broad casts.... I had had enough - I gave my TV away to a scumbag junkie - because TV's are what you give to people you hate... SO I have watched basically NO TV for the last 12 years and very little in the 10 or 12 years before that. But there is or was a "multicultural" TV station called SBS, that became all corporateised and lefty bullshit and they used to run some good programs and the Lone Wolf and Cub shows were on that... My hours were eratic and the times when the shows were on were subject to change because of assorted other "more important" broadcasts instead of regular reliable scheduling - so it was hard to get into many things and follow them...
