“Antabuse is by far the quickest and most effective way for problem drinkers to achieve long-term abstinence from alcohol. Its under-use mainly reflects the unfortunate fact that addiction treatment is heavily influenced by ideological and moral concerns. There are no vicious arguments about how best to treat diabetes or take out an appendix.”
Colin Brewer
Former Director, Community Alcoholism Treatment Service, Westminster Hospital, London

The book's back cover text:

Received wisdom tells us it’s very difficult for problem drinkers to abstain from alcohol. Received wisdom is wrong. Quick and reliable abstinence can be attained with Antabuse (disulfiram), a drug licenced by the American Food & Drug Administration in 1951, 75 years before the publication of this book.

The book is the result of a collaboration between a former problem drinker – over 2013-23, the leader of Justice for Men & Boys, a British political party – and an American friend, a substance abuse counsellor for 30+ years. They explain Antabuse is THE safe and quickest route to reliable abstinence – a one-step program. They also explain why 12-step based programs almost always fail. The programs are based on the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program developed in the 1930s, which has barely changed in 90+ years. They are highly lucrative programs precisely because they so rarely succeed in delivering long-term abstinence, as ‘failed’ drinkers return to them time and time again.

The 12-step based programs’ ‘one size fits all’ philosophy disempowers drinkers and takes no account of the considerable understandings about addictions that have been made in the past 90+ years. The authors outline the (free) offerings of LifeRing Secular Recovery, an empowering alternative to 12-step programs.

This book is all problem drinkers require to start their successful journeys towards abstinence from alcohol, journeys on their way to becoming happier, healthier and wealthier.
