Mother sentenced to life for going on vacation, leaving toddler home alone to die

An Ohio woman has been found guilty of aggravated murder and child endangerment, after she left her 16-month-old home alone for 10 days to go on vacation. Kristel Candelario, 32, went to Detroit and Puerto Rico in June 2023 while her daughter Jailyn was at home on her own in Cleveland, in her playpen. When she returned 10 days later, she discovered that Jailyn wasn’t breathing and called 911. Emergency services pronounced the toddler dead shortly after they arrived, and it was later confirmed that she had died of starvation and severe dehydration.

Candelario was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.
