Levels of Absolute Freedom Each Century
Humanity builds vast systems for collective security, which become inescapable cages. The majority accepts this trade, but a faction—sovereign engineers—consistently refuses, using each era's pinnacle technology to build arks of escape.
In the 21st century, as Earth's megacities became totalizing digital prisons, they perfected three technologies: exosuits providing complete mobile life support, miniaturized atmospheric water generators severing grid dependence, and bio-engineered fast-growing food eliminating agricultural supply chains. These made them system-agnostic, free to roam the planet's contaminated margins.
By the 23rd century, humanity's system had expanded across the solar system. The engineers responded by harnessing narrow AI to solve interstellar propulsion. The result was lightspeed craft—vast, nanometer-thin sails pushed by massive laser arrays, carrying habitable vessels to nearby stars.
This was the ultimate evasion. Not conquest or imperial colonization, but finding unknown planets where sovereign human existence could continue beyond any system's reach. The engineers preserved the ancient dream: that with sufficient mastery of technology, a man could walk away from the machinery of control and live truly free among the stars.

This is an excellent watch or listen too - I play it on loop and sleep / wake up etc...
Some where around half way through it he discusses the issues of other intelligent radio and space faring species and the apparent absolute null odds of there ever being any of them, and the absolute time scales to send and receive signals etc., and the absolutely enormous, distances etc., and IF there were ever any intelligent space and radio faring species, over the billions of light years of distances - if anything ever flickers into existence, it can just as easily flicker out over 10 million, 100 million or a billion years, never to be seen again.
