Herbivore Men (草食系男子) and Masculinity: The Rise of the Beautiful Ones

⁣The cause of the declining population in contemporary Japanese society is a multifaceted predicament; one proposed reason being herbivore men with 2009 marking the year this term became mainstream. Given that herbivore men tend to not pursue the opposite sex, they are branded as being a major contributor to the potential decline of their society. This article aims to propose an explanation as to why these males don’t pursue the opposite sex by drawing parallels between extant research on herbivore masculinity, the “Mouse Utopia” experiment, and Object Relations theory.
