Germany has started deploying a combat-ready, independent unit in Lithuania. When it becomes fully operational in 2027, the unit will number 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilians, although only 150 are expected to be deployed this year. This marks the first time that Germany has permanently stationed troops outside its borders since the Second World War, when German troops were also ‘stationed’ in Lithuania.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas described the deployment as 'proof of German reliability, which is very, very important for us and the whole region.’ Meanwhile, one of the unit’s commanders, Colonel Andre Hastner, compared the situation to ‘40 years ago, when the Allies were in Germany and ensured our freedom and peace.’ True, NATO was pushing eastwards back then, too.
