A full video of the now-infamous clip of a BBC newsreader giving the middle finger to the camera has been released by the BBC, and somehow the clip is even funnier. Maryam Moshiri began her broadcast a few weeks ago with an inexplicable middle finger to the audience before composing herself and reading the BBC output of the day, which unsurprisingly went viral. But why did she do it? Some sort of political commentary on Boris Johnson? Just explicitly flipping off the audience, as opposed to implicitly? It turns out, she was doing a countdown… for some reason.

Presumably counting along with the director’s countdown, she decided to end the countdown not with the traditional index finger for the one, but with a middle finger thrust straight at the camera. Even so, it’s still not quite clear exactly what she was thinking and how she was unable to consider the consequences of her actions mere milliseconds into the future. Did she not realize the cameras were about to come on? Are the BBC so poor that newsreaders have to count themselves in? Did she never watch that bit in ‘Wayne’s World’ where they explain ‘you don’t say two or one?’ We may never know.
