FOG Data Science collects commercially accessible location data gathered from hundreds of mobile apps, like the Starbucks and Waze apps, that market information on user interests and movements. The service has annual subscription fees of at least $7,500. Despite the anonymization of the data, officials have stated that skilled law enforcement may utilize the information to identify specific people. Since at least 2018, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement organizations in the United States have employed fog reveal. The Dallas Police Department and the sheriff's office in Rockingham County, North Carolina were two of the "almost two dozen departments" with whom FOG Data Science had 40 contracts, according to documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation through the Freedom of Information Act. Without a search warrant, the software has been used to track individuals.
