FLOODED & BOGGED! Do we get out? Once in a decade storm Floods Australia’s DRIEST town!

This week on OFFGRID, Graham and the convoy are heading North on their way from Esperance to Darwin via the legendary 620KM long Oodnadatta Track. It's early in the season, and the crew are travelling ahead of the crowds and cool weather of the winter months; but that comes with its own risks.

A late wet season rain obliterates the north end of the track, turning roads into rivers and making for wild conditions. The crew fights road closures, deep crossings and muddy bypasses and as they try to push through to one of Australia's remotest pubs, the Mt Dare Hotel.

When and where is your next adventure? Tell us about it and spare no detail!

interesting, is it normal for ozzies to not have wider tires when going offroad/offgrid?
also dualies on the trucks/SUVs would help as well as have 2 axels on the travel trailer...

Yeah I think they do have wide all terrain tyres on, and yeah there are twin axle 4WD's but these only get fitted on the units that carry 2 or 3 tons in the back and the caravans can come with the twin axles - but they have bought a shorter one that usually only seem to come with a single axle, the larger caravans come with 2 axles and the extended family caravans come with three axles... But you have to have a few people to justify the larger vans and you also need a place to park it - and they are hard to justify for only 2 weeks holiday a year some years... many people who get them are commercial operators of some description who find the "mobile home / office" caravan to be of a great benefit.

That's why I am pissy about anything that soaks up money, time, space, effort etc... a bed roll and a tent and a bucket and a bar of soap... anything beyond that and it's like "fuck this, not interested."

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: true for the most part, but in this case dual axels on the trucks/suv's might not be a good idea, have three axels on a trailer would actually cause more problems with off roading...

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: i also agree minimalist is good or as compact as possible, but what i was saying is if they used dualies on the trucks/suv's then it would be better for more traction dont necessarily need another axel for that also that might be the answer if they have super wide tires already... and yes budgeting does come into it but less so when you have 5-6 sponsors for your trip lol

@sbseed: Well you see, all the dirt in Australia is actually Martian dirt, and Maritan dirt, because of all the galactic irradiation from "unfettered" cosmic rays (no atmosphere to speak of) makes Maritian dirt 200,000 x as hydrophillic as earth dirt - meaning with the slightest amount of water, it turns to mud so slippery and deep, that they have found cars that have sunk to the core of the earth..... True. What’s Worse Than One Bogged D11 -Vlog 11- https://www.mgtow.tv/v/C55GCY Extra wide off road tyres, extra axles, etc., etc., etc.. Just pray you don't get bogged and start sinking..... Cause you will never be seen alive again.

@sbseed: And that blue 8 wheeled tractor, that is not exactly light weight and there was a problem identified 20 or 30 years ago, as to why wheat etc., does not grow very well in the tracks of tractors - and it comes down to how much weight there is per area of tyre, and this in turn means the tractor can float OVER the soil OR it compresses all the air spaces out of the soil and makes it hard for air to get in and out of the soil as well as for water to get into it..... So it is a BIG heavy tractor that can pull shitloads of equipment behind it, but it's flotation limit is below the compaction pressure of the soil.... https://www.soilquality.org.au..../factsheets/soil-com ----------- https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/cl....imate-land-water/soi ------- https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/so....il-compaction/soil-c --------- Research has found the compaction problem is becoming increasingly deeper and more severe in the wheatbelt. Samples taken from across the northern agricultural region found that 100% of paddocks sampled without previous deep ripping had a soil penetration resistance of 2.5Mpa, (enough to slow root growth by 70%) (Figure 1). More concerning was 80% of farms sampled have compaction of 3Mpa, which severely restricts root growth, at 30cm depth and 40% of samples had a soil resistance of greater than below 30cm.

@sbseed: All that being said, that 8 wheeled blue tractor, is an exceptionally hard vehicle to get bogged. But it sunk up to the belly.....

@sbseed: But did you notice it, that once the blue eight wheeled tractor got towed out, it sort of popped up out of the mud like a cork..... Where as the bulldozers, slowly rose out, as they moved out of the deep wet mud, and into the firmer drier earth.....

I generally hate carting more shit around than is essential - change of clothes, a bed roll and a few tools etc., and some supplies that's it.

So I actually - I don't hate them - but I dislike the whole BIG 4 wheel drives and the HUGE caravans - kinds of people and life style.......

It's just too much shit to cart everywhere.

It's also a demonstration in exponentiation - of how 2 + 2 + 2 type life styles (obtaining the means and the gathering costs, and the maintenance costs) shift from the bare minimum, into an exponential resource suck...

From a small tent and a bed roll, in the back of the ute = $200, to the cost of a fairly large caravan for 2 people = $80,000 and the tyres are $300 each, the gas tanks, the solar panels, raaaa raaaaaa raaaaaaa

And the fuel consumption starts to sky rocket, and the running costs start to sky rocket, and the parking issues start to become a huge pain in the arse, and if you have a crash - there is a LOT more to go wrong - starting with COSTS and DISTANCE and getting things repaired...

So I think, "If your going to go camping - little tent and a bed roll etc., why are you dragging a house along with you and then getting a vehicle that has to be able to tow 2 or 3 tons of caravan as well? I mean fuck me...?"

So I just kind of hate the whole 4WD scene and the people into it.

But Australia is a great place and it's HUGE and this video is "so out of the city" - which is where I like to be and the wide open spaces are brilliant... and so are the dirt roads and the floods and droughts etc...

Which I like to proudly show off to the people of the world.

You should see it here, between the SUV's and pick-up trucks! Everybody has to get 4 wheel drive and the fuckers never leave pavement!

@bigintol03: There is a "posh" (very wealthy) suburb of Melbourne which is on the Yarra river and the CBD is like a stones throw away (sort of) and a lot of the people there, drive BIG 4WD type cars, and it's not like they live in some remote rural property or a farm where they need 4WD vehicles.... And so the slang is to call them "Toorak Tractors".

@bigintol03: It's like the opening static image, those vehicles - the big 4WD - that's fair if you work in the country and you have to get to farms to service combine harvesters and all that shit and you need to carry a ton of tools and spares.. and many roads and locations are on dirt roads or ploughed fields - and it does rain in Australia, allegedly...... So I see them around the place a lot.... Like going along sealed highway XXXB7 (or something) - "Jesus fucking shit - it's peak hour congestion! That's the 5th car I have seen in 9 hours!"

@Life_N_Times_of_Shane_T_Hanson: I have nothing against big SUV's and pick-up's if you have a use for them! But most of the clowns in this country anyway, drive them as a status symbol!
