It's all science and maths.... liquid fuels don't burn (not including rocket fuels like flourine etc) as liquids.,.... the vapour when mixing with air, has upper and lower flamability limits..... If there is too much fuel vapor or not enough, in the air, the gas mix, will not burn - BUT if you get it within that range of flammability - the air and fuel vapour will burn. What happened is that when she began to pour out the alcohol, the air went into the container to replace what came out - and the flame flashed up the stream of fuel and the vapour over the surface of the fuel, and into the container - and in that mixing zone the ratios of air to fuel vapour were right enough to ignite and combust. When air and fuel vapour go from 30*C to say 1200*C - it expands rapidly - and it can blow or spray a heap of liquid fuel out of the container - and over things in the general area.....
