Hungarian obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis discovered in the 1840s that handwashing with a chlorinated lime solution drastically reduced mortality rates from childbed fever in maternity clinics. He observed that patients treated by doctors coming directly from autopsies were dying at much higher rates than those treated by midwives. Despite plummeting death rates after his protocol was implemented, the medical establishment in Vienna rejected his findings, largely because it implied doctors themselves were responsible for spreading disease.
