When you have the respect of others, you'll have an easier life. However, a Stoic would call it a preferred indifference. Respect of others, by definition, is not fully within your control. Stoicism teaches you to not waste time worrying about things beyond your control. I don't really care if other people respect me or not because I stopped caring about what people think long before I studied Stoicism.
With that said, it is indeed very important to know how to defend yourself.
