when we lived on the other side of the state growing up the town we lived in had trains running through regularly, most of the trains took anywhere from 15 to 30 min to pass, rarely longer... the lengths of the cargo carrying trains where 7 plus miles in length... those times and length of train do not necessarily equate...
but it does go to show what kind of awesome power those massive diesel engines can produce... the hardest parts are getting them going and then getting them to stop, if i remember right a lot of these cargo only hauling trains would take anywhere from 60-150 miles to slow down and stop (might be wrong on this stuff but hopefully not too far off)....

passenger trains are a completely different setup and usually have electromagnetic braking as apposed to the drum braking systems on the older cargo only trains...
passenger trains also do not need as much power since the load is minuscule in comparison.

I love trains....

There is two issues in a crash.

The big bits that are or might come your way, after a crash or a derailment.

Then there is the HUGE amount of extra train and inertia, coming after it.
