@Bagoodman: Pilate gave it back to the people because he has been threatened several times.. If he applied justice and liberated Jesus, he would have got riots in 3/4 of Jerusalem... What would Tiberius do to pilate if he heard that kind of news ? Who are the pharisees these days ? You get me ? ;-)
