These are so easy to start......
I used to build them..... been a while though.
Fuel on, a little choke, in neutral, roll the crankshaft around a couple of revolutions - to draw fresh mixture into the cylinders, roll it over to position the pistons ~ 1/2 way to TDC, turn the ignition on, throttle to about 1/4 open, raise the kick starter to a full stroke engagement, and kick it over = piss easy.

Except for the horrendous fuel consumption of 9 Km a liter with a stock engine (5:1 compression side valve) - they are one of the best bikes ever.......

Fuck they were nice.... AND people go, "Oh it's a rigid frame" (no rear suspension) - but they had suspension allright - by going "just so" with the air pressure in the back tyre, so it had a little bit of spring and a little bit of flex in the side wall, that was a primary source of "suspension", and the secondary form of rear suspension was the thickly greased "sprung" seat post.... that had "suspension travel" and the the grease was the "dampener" - like the oils in "shock absorbers".

Like I was involved with developing formula one suspension systems for modern motorcycles, but people underestimated just how good and how nicely handling a 45 (cubic inch ~750 cc) WL or WLA motorcycle really was....

AND despite the hype, you really ride and steer and attune yourself to the bikes handlingcharacteristics, through your arse...

Whaaaa that is a long time ago... Like I am not a super duper Harley fan and I don't recall every model and ownership of the company - but the AMF take over - I remember that - and the Sons of the Founders buying the company back. What kind of shape is the bike in? The voices in my head say it's an 883 sportster with blue and white and red on the tank....

This is one of the very few "good looking" Harleys... https://cdn.shopify.com/s/file....s/1/0097/0506/2447/t

Did you notice that almost NON of them knew how to "feel" over an engine to the compression stroke, and to set the kick starter for a full stroke... When these are set up properly and just so, they are SO EASY to start up... The army units came with a blow torch to warm up the cylinders and heads when it was deeply sub zero.... I wanted to make up barrels and heads and new valve profiles, and convert the side valve into an over head valve - with say 8:1 compression... because it was the horrendous fuel consumption that took it out of the daily commute With the stock build, I put a SU carburettor from an 860cc Mini Minor on it, 33 tooth sprocket on the motor, intstead of the 31 tooth, and the final drive sprocket on the gear box was a 23 tooth instead of a 21 tooth (getting very distant memories with this) and the back wheel was a 16" rim laced into a honda 750 hub... and it had about 2 teeth smaller than the stock sprocket, so instead of a cruising speed of 80 Kmh, it had an intermittent cruising speed of 100 Kmh and instead of getting 9 K to the liter - I was getting 11 Km to the liter.... But if your commuting 200 Km a day - THAT is a HUGE amount of fuel to be paying for.... Just rounding it to 10 K a liter... well on the bike over 200 Km, that is 20 liters at $2 a liter, that is $40 a day in fuel....... The most frugal cars get 3.4 liters per 100 Km... so that is say 7 Liters per 200 Km or $14 a day. So the 45 would cost $200 in fuel a week - where as the car would cost $70 a week. Then multiply this by 42 weeks a year x 10 years and the bike is costing $84,000 in fuel and the car is costing $32,000. Over 10 years - that is a HUGE difference. And this is why I started to get REALLY angry about the brain dead management of Harley Davidson, building low compression, low effiency, side valve engines, and putting them into motorcycles for so fucking long.... I mean they had 4 valve heads on the racing bikes in the late teens and early 20's..... So they knew about compression ratios, efficient cylinder filling and miles per gallon issues from a long way back but they persisted with the very worst of the fuel efficient designs for so long.... And no wonder the Japs ate their market share... But when you bring their fuckup low effiency designs coming out of your pocket by the truck load - it ceases to be funny.

@Squeaker: Post a picture of it..... I know most of the brands - and forget 10 x as many and there are 10 x as many that I have never heard of.... but I am an expert.
