Sydney Sweeney Controversy | Why Women Tear Other Women Down
This episode asks whether the controversy surrounding Sydney Sweeney’s Novig sports advertisement is really just about the sexualisation of women in sport — or whether female intrasexual competition may help explain part of what we are watching.
Women are often portrayed as less competitive, aggressive, jealous, or ruthless than men. Men may also dismiss gossip, exclusion, ridicule, sexual rumours, and reputational attacks as harmless female drama. But when choosing who you allow into your life — patterns matter.
Decades of research have examined female intrasexual competition, including mate preferences, competitor derogation, indirect aggression, sexual rivalry, gossip, stigma, exclusion, reputation, and women’s responses to attractive or sexually provocative female rivals.
I examine: Professor David Buss' landmark research involving more than 10,000 people across 33 countries; four studies of same-sex competitor derogation; a multidisciplinary review of female competition; experimental research in which indirect aggression rose dramatically depending on how the same woman was dressed; and research examining reputational aggression as a competitive strategy.
The research does not show that all women behave this way, nor does it establish that criticism of Sydney Sweeney is caused by female rivalry. But it does show that female competition and indirect aggression are real, studied phenomena — and that men should pay attention to how someone treats friends, rivals, and ex-partners.
Indirect aggression is still aggression — and the pattern around it may tell you much more than you are prepared for.
