That is quite a nice bridge. I am sure that the engineers who designed it, knew exactly what they were doing. However, since it can get down to minus 44*C, I'd be fitting some big, strong and low angled ice breaker buffers to the river bottom, ahead of the supporting pillars in the river - This is to stop unusually large ice floes ramming the piers and to break them up by driving them up a ramp....

@InfiniteMushroom: Yeah I am a bit less ignorant today, than I was yesterday, about the issue of ice breaking pylons... and your right about the pointy upstream edges being ice breaking edges. I am basically lacking in REAL knowledge and historical records about the entire region.... I was thinking more in terms of building to excess, as when compounding issues arise, like very heavy seasonal rain and snow falls arise, and it's another of the super coldest winters on record, and the there are huge amounts of flooding in the catchment area, and there were HUGE snowfalls up in the mountains etc., so the whole combination of things makes for a river that is flooded - way deeper and the ice running down stream is like 2 meters + thick and it piles up against the pylons etc.. that location is one of the places that a lot of over kill on the resistance to impact with BIG long and SLOPED ice breakers - that are just huge, long narrow ramps, and go out a fair way ahead of the pylons... Just somehow the idea of going into some serious excess ice busting and pylon protection, seems to fit with the location...

@InfiniteMushroom: And it's so nice to see them celebrating Gay Pride Month with the fireworks and all... Very Christian of the CCP to do this.
