'In my mind....I don't say it to his face'.

That is part of the problem.

No—I am not advising you exhibit aggression with violence. But there are ways to both defend yourself from would-be tyrants and insult them with tact.

One of the first occasions I recall from ling ago (working for government), was an office manager that insisted I process paperwork both in high volume and with perfect accuracy...within an impossibly small period of time.

After telling the manager that I could offer high accuracy OR high processing (either selection diminishing the other), she initiated a rant.

Pausing from her rant (due to her being out of breath), I then proceeded,

'Are you done?'
'Accuracy or Volume?'

She insisted, again, on both.

I then proceeded, 'Since you cannot decide, I elect accuracy, since I refuse to diminish the quality of my work for the appearance of productivity. If you find the proposition unacceptable, I can resign my position now'.

The manager paused, look at me for a moment, then went back into her office, sans any more words.

End of, 'one of those days', in that position...and all the pursuant positions.

It is vital to always have in mind that employers and employees both serve a purpose. (Until either of one does not, of course).

I stopped having 'one of those days' when I stopped caring about most things...that included my (past) career.
